‘The Tower’ is an intimate 2 person play, created in response to the climate emergency, exploring how extreme weather and flooding might affect the less wealthy in society, alongside themes of family, legacy and how we tell our stories once the power has gone.
Project Overview
As the Lead Graphic Designer for this project, I was tasked by Wild Elk Productions to build a visual concept for a stage play rooted in a near-future dystopia. The brief called for an aesthetic that felt ominous, brooding, and…watery.
Analog Exploration: I began the design process by experimenting with watercolours & weaving those organic textures into stark, monochromatic images of brutalist blocks of flats. I focused on juxtaposing the rigid, geometric lines of the architecture with the fluid, dark beauty of the marks that I could make with a paintbrush and paint.
Artistic Influence: My creative direction was deeply inspired by the striking, minimalist compositions of Vasilis Marmatakis and his iconic artwork for film director Yorgos Lanthimos.
Digital Execution: To deliver the final assets, I translated the concept by mark making in Procreate on an iPad. This allowed me to emulate the fluidity of my original watercolours while giving the final graphic elements the clean, sharp edges required for production.
